Welcome to the new style of formal fashion. Forget dated evening gowns or boring cocktail dresses. The new formal fashion, as seen on runways everywhere, is silky and slinky, dramatic and unexpected. Take inspiration from designers like Roberto Cavalli and Halston Heritage and their stunning evening gowns, always perfectly balanced between formal and casual.

Flowing shapes

Lets stay away from corseted bodices and bodycon skirts for now. The new formal fashion is all about effortless glamour, so that means loose, flowing silhouettes. Nothing too tight or too stiff. You know you’ve got it right when your dress touches and skims in all the right places – not a shapeless sack, but never uncomfortable. Enjoy a dress that moves as you move, and catches the tiniest hint of a breeze. Exotic prints

Delicate florals and pretty polka dots? I don’t think so. Forget taking your inspiration from 50’s fashion (of cause except attending a 50s themed party, haha) and look to the glamorous, modern prints for a far more contemporary take on formal fashion. Exotic prints are the perfect way to combine elegance with edginess – try exotic palm-inspired prints, rich baroque detailing, and oversized prints in bold colors.

Unexpected accessories

The number one rule for the new formal fashion? There are no rules! Click To TweetDon’t worry about old-fashioned guidelines for mixing and matching. Wear what you love and it's sure to look fantastic. Click To Tweet These glitter-encrusted heels are the perfect example. They look bold and unexpected as well as fun and full of personality. The right accessories can transform your outfit, so choose something special.

The same goes for jewelry. Floral designs are perfect to combine with exotic tropical prints. I thought some statement pieces of the matching colour of claret-red necklace and bracelet would go well with such dramatic and vibrant gown.Choose unexpected colors rather than opting for old-fashioned matching (but of cause moderately). Smoky topaz shades and vivid lilac are unexpectedly beautiful with green and gold patterns.

Casual hair & smokey makeup

As you might expect, the new formal fashion doesn’t require you to spend hours on the perfect updo and classic red lip. Keep your hair loose and casual, just like your dress. Relaxed curls or beach waves are perfect for evening style that never looks overdone or like you’ve tried too hard. Bronzed skin and smoky eyes are the ideal makeup look for glamorous evening style with a little bit of edginess.
